Creative Movement program places emphasis on self-discovery through movement with structure of a ballet class. Students relish the fundamental relationship between music and movement with dance activities carefully designed to benefit our youngest students. This class is a wonderful first dance experience for ages 3-5, designed to introduce children characterization in creative dance as well as simple ballet vocabulary. Movement concepts including level, tempo, energy, shapes, place and direction are incorporated into exercises to improve and strengthen motor skills and non-locomotion skills.
The Preparatory Ballet Program (Pre-Ballet) is part of the Young Dancers Division, designed as transitional levels between Creative Movement and formal ballet training. The structure of the class offers children a measured approach to classical ballet technique. Students gain understanding of ballet vocabulary using French terms. Flexing and stretching help students isolate muscles promote a basic understanding of body placement. At the Barre, students are introduced to proper body alignment with core control. Students continue to explore movement concepts including level, tempo, energy, shapes, place & direction and discover ways to apply them to movement. Rhythmical, coordination and improvisational exercises are incorporated to encourage musicality, confidence, quick thinking and fast response time.
Upon entering the Student Division, dance students regard classroom etiquette and the structure of the class as part of their lessons. They are ready to expand on previously acquired rhythmical, musical and technical skills as the basis for grand steps in ballet. The curriculum encourages growth in ballet vocabulary and the proper execution of movement through the repetition of steps or sequences. With replication and increased stretching, students gain strength and learn to utilize isolate muscle groups. Students discover the connection between core strength and body placement. Ballet technique expands as we begin coordinating the use of head, legs and arms. students master new steps, learning to make clean shapes and lines in body positions. Previously learned steps are re introduced in more challenging ways and are linked with transitional steps. Students are encouraged to understand proper warm up and stretching exercises for future progress and maintaining healthy dancing bodies.
Students in Pre Apprentice Division, Ballet 4 & 5 appreciate the discipline of Classical Ballet and recognized structure and etiquette as part of their training. These students show growth in the execution of steps and the quality of movement; gained through repetition and precision in practice. Increased flexibility and core strength is expected with great understanding of body placement. Students learn to strengthen isolated groups of muscles to help with more controlled movement and stronger technique. Students continue to master new skills, sequences and choreography using proper alignment. These dance students are expanding their ballet vocabulary with better understanding of how to execute steps. In class and rehearsal, students demonstrate delightful dispositions and physical capability to approach new challenges.
Students in the Apprentice & Pre Professional Division, Ballet 6-8 are expected to adhere to class etiquette and discipline during lessons, rehearsals and theatre time - dancers are responsible for conducting themselves honorably both inside and outside their class. Students at this level attend classes consistently and show focus and determination in their training. Progress is continual and demonstrated in strength and proper execution of technique. Students continue to acquire an expansive ballet vocabulary to align with their skills. Students continue to refine their movements to enhance their performing talents and are challenged to pursue and demonstrate higher levels of excellence; in class and on stage through their technique, flexibility, strength, focus, disposition, etiquette & responsibility.
Auxiliary Classes reinforce curriculum goals for our academy students. These classes offer students opportunity to enhance skills, promote self-esteem, self-efficacy, and maintain a positive self-image. With direction from the teacher, an auxiliary class may allow for student decision-making in designated portions of the class. This approach embraces the varied strengths, abilities, values, personalities, and constraints in each student - giving them a unique voice in their movement. Classes in Musical Theatre & Dance, To the Core and Jazz offer students more opportunity to love dance!
